Tokyo City Boys Make St Ignatius Their Home

Our visitors from Tokyo City University Junior and Senior High School arrived on Saturday and have quickly settled into life at St Ignatius. It has been wonderful to see how warmly they have been welcomed into our community, and already we can see friendships developing that we hope will continue long after the boys return to Japan. Each of our Japanese students has been paired with a St Ignatius buddy, accompanying them to classes and experiencing everyday school life in New Zealand. Alongside their regular classes, the boys have taken part in special New Zealand experiences each day, including Turbo Touch, Te Reo Māori, Digital Technology, weaving and cooking. The cooking classes have been a particular highlight, with the boys discovering some Kiwi favourites — including chocolate-covered ANZAC biscuits and lolly cake!

The boys will be with us for one more week, with plenty more experiences still to come. Their visit is part of the growing relationship between St Ignatius and Tokyo City University Junior and Senior High School, and each visit continues to strengthen what is becoming a very special partnership between our two school communities. A huge thank you must also go to our buddy students and homestay families, whose manaakitanga makes experiences like this possible. By opening our classrooms, friendship groups and homes to our visitors, we are not only sharing life in Aotearoa New Zealand but helping all of our students grow as confident and compassionate global citizens.
