Environmental Group Makes a Difference Through Trees for Survival

The Environmental Group Elective at St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic College continues to make a positive impact both within our school and in the wider community. Throughout the year, students have been actively involved in recycling initiatives, maintaining our school gardens, and participating in the Trees for Survival programme.

Following the installation of our shade houses last year, students received native seedlings which they carefully nurtured and repotted throughout 2025. Their hard work and dedication culminated on Monday, 22 June, when students from the Environmental Elective, joined by volunteers from the Duke of Edinburgh Elective, travelled to a farm in Waiau Pa to plant out the now well-established native trees.

The day provided beautiful weather and stunning views across the Manukau Harbour. Students worked enthusiastically to plant a steep banked area, helping to restore native vegetation and improve the local environment. It was wonderful to see students demonstrating resilience, teamwork, and a commitment to environmental stewardship as they tackled the challenging terrain.

A special thank you goes to Mrs Singh and Nadia McFadden for their support throughout the day, and to Kirsten Orec, Trees for Survival Coordinator, who has been instrumental in supporting this initiative over the past two years.

Most importantly, thank you to all the students who have contributed to the project from seedling to planting. Through their efforts, they are making a meaningful difference to our local community and helping to create a healthier environment for future generations.
